New Paltz Continued . . .

The most distinguishable physical characteristic the area is the Mohonk Mountain. The protruding mountain face with a light house perched on top, can be seen from almost any part of New Paltz.  Main Street New Paltz is often very alive with artisans and college students from the local university. Many small shops and restaurants stay quite busy taking full vantage of the small town bustle.

The name New Paltz was first recorded in variation, on an area deed of land held by a French school teacher by the name of Jean Cottin, dated 1689. The deed gives the name twice as palls in the lower case, as is common in the French tradition. Before and after the 1689, the area was referred to as Palls or Paltz. Later in 1703, the lands were subdivided and conveyed to Louis Bevier. The English name given to the new subdivision was, ye New Paltz which eventually gave way simply to New Paltz.

Because of the proximity to the New York State Thruway and access to the Mid-Hudson Bridge, the New Paltz NY real estate market stays relatively strong.  Further economic impact is made by the State University at New Paltz or SUNY New Paltz significantly adding to the local population while school is in session.
