Kingston Continued . . .
The City of Kingston was first known as Esopus after a local Indian tribe that occupied the area, later to be referred to as Wiltwyck. It was one of the three largest settlements in New Netherland, the other two were Beverwyck and Manhattan Island. In the late 1700s Kingston was established as the first capital of New York State. Soon after the official establishment of the capital (and during the Battle of Saratoga), the city was burned by British as they made their way up the Hudson River by way of New York City. The area of Kingston nearest to the intersection of the Hudson River and the Rondout Creek was a major storage area for the local agricultural export (and military supply line) of wheat. Being important to the strength of the area and the military, the British burned the stock piles and all but one or two of the buildings.
Today, Kingston combines the lifestyle of suburban living, with the modern conveniences that have made our lives easier. With easy access just off Exit 19 of the New York State Thruway, Kingston is a quick jaunt from just about anywhere on the eastern part of New York State. The city has a growing commercial atmosphere while maintaining the historical value that has made Kingston the cultural center that it is today.
