Most of the history of High Falls centers on the implementation of the D&H Canal. The D&H Canal museum is positioned in the heart of High Falls, adjacent to a portion of the canal and locks. Constructed from 1825 to 1829 the D & H Canal was built to transport coal from mines in northeastern Pennsylvania to markets on the Hudson River. Towpath locks 16 to 20 of the Delaware & Hudson Canal run through the hamlet of High Falls. This canal was built from 1825-1829 and, at a cost of approximately $1 million, the first canal in American history built as a completely private enterprise.
Today, you can tour the D&H Canal area and museum to learn much of the history and its significance to Ulster County. As is the case with most of Ulster County, High Falls offers an heightened quality of life and a variety of culture and activity.
