The Shawangunk Ridge, also referred to as the Shawangunk Mountains, or The Gunks is a ridge located in the mountain range spanning Ulster County, Sullivan County and Orange County in Upstate New York approximately 90 minutes north of NYC. The rock climber's paradise extends from the northern part of New Jersey to the Catskill Mountains of New York with its most popular portion being located in New Paltz, New York.
The Gunks ridgetop, which widens mostly at its New York end, has many areas both for public and private use. Despite its popularity, the Gunk area is not heavily populated in terms of residential real estate, having only one settlement of consequence (unincorporated Cragsmoor). While in the past it was chiefly noted for berry picking, and the controlled fires set to sustain favorable conditions for undergrowth, today it has become known for its outdoor recreation, the biggest of which is one of the major rock climbing areas in North America.
