Like many areas on the same side of the Shawangunk mountain range, the initial settlers were Huguenots from France. The Town of Gardiner was established in 1853 from parts of the Towns of New Paltz, Rochester and Shawangunk. It was dubbed Gardiner in honor of Addison Gardiner, formerly Lieutenant Governor.
Today, Gardiner is most recognized for skydiving, mountain climbing, wineries and apple picking. The Gardiner real estate scene is strong and getting stronger. Being on the southerly portion of Ulster County, Gardiner is a haven for home buyers in coming north from more saturated real estate markets.
