Esopus Continued . . .

The name Esopus was said to be extracted from one of three storied traditions. One tradition says the name comes from the Algonquian word for "rivulet." Another tradition states that the name is synonymous with the Indian term. The third tradition gives naming credit to the Greek story teller, Aesop.

Today, the town still has a good blend of light industrial and agricultural business. Fruit growing, wineries and other historically significant industry are alive and well and add to the economic well fare of the town. Two historical light houses still stand in the river opposite of the Town of Esopus, one of which stands at the mouth of Rondout Creek.

The Esopus real estate market is a melting pot of affordable middle range homes and high end luxury homes. The geographical location makes for easy commuting between Kingston and New Paltz along the 9w corridor.
