Ellenville Continued . . .
The village began to flourish in the 18th and 19th century, as the Town of Wawarsing became a hub of commercial activity. The Rondout Creek waterway powered mills and factories in neighboring Napanoch, NY. The D&H Canal, also contributed to the economic health of the village.
The village continued to thrive well into the 20th century maintaining its commercial foundation. The industrial support of Channel Masters, IBM, The Ellenville Handle Works and Scharade Knife created jobs and economic stability for the Village of Ellenville, Town of Wawarsing and surrounding parts of Ulster County. The down-turn came about when these 4 companies closed their doors leaving behind a wake of unemployment and economic disaster. Smaller businesses that relied on the workforce for patronage were also faced with hardship.
Today's there are the early signs of economic renewal, new commerce, restaurants and housing are creating new hope for both locals and visitors. The Shadowland Theater and the Aroma Thyme Bistro are creating an influx of people from outside the area and will hopefully support a chain reaction effect on the local economy.
The Ellenville real estate scene is alive and well. The village attracts savvy real estate investors and smart home buyers that recognize the positive trend in its infancy (which is a rarity in today’s national economy). The majority of the homes in Ellenville are well-kept and demonstrate a definite pride of ownership.
