The town is made up of two hamlets, Claryville and Sundown which both are in Ulster County but separated by a jutting portion of Sullivan County. The hamlet of Sundown lies within a narrow valley shaded by steep embankments and towering trees possibly giving the name to the hamlet by always seeming as though its near "sundown". The Claryville (not as interesting) was the namesake of the wife of an early landowner, just as Denning was.
Earlier on in history, the economy was supported by the dense population of Hemlock trees. As time went on, the mills and farms were no longer enough to support the economy and Denning became a town that was visited only for the beautiful mountains and valleys and the excellent trout fishing provided by the many streams than run through it.
As you might guess, the Denning real estate market is slow in comparison to the rest of Ulster County. It isn't as geographically accessible to urban areas making it difficult for the local economy to flourish. However, if seclusion is what you are seeking, Denning offers great prices and plenty of privacy.
