Accord Continued . . .
Originally named Port Jackson, it is strongly believed that the name "Accord" came about as a consequence of a petition of the local townspeople to the New York State capitol in Albany for a new name. The response from Albany was that the responsible authorities could not come to an accord about a new name for Port Jackson and named it "Accord". The local pronunciation of this word is with a flat 'A' with the accent on the 'A' (ack-chord) which is different from the Honda Accord pronounced with the accent on the 'chord' (a-chord).
One of the more interesting attractions of Accord is the historic site of the Accord Train Station. Built in 1902, the Accord Train Station gave way to newer improved highways putting an end to its use as a pioneering passenger access to the lower Catskill Mountains and lightly-populated portions of upstate New York.
Personally, Accord is one of my favorite areas in Ulster County. The Accord NY real estate market isn't as saturated as other areas in Ulster County but possess many of the same features of some more premium locations keeping the home prices a little more affordable. In addition, there isn't much industry there either maintaining a lot of its' historical and natural beauty. The area was settled as farmland and there are still a good amount of small family farms in operation today.
